It’s a beautiful day for a bike ride through Golden Gate Park. The trees are covered in pink and white flowers at this time of year. Don’t forget to stop at Park Chalet for a drink in the back garden.

We had beautiful weather here last weekend in San Francisco with the temperature in some areas reaching 70 degrees. When I went home to visit my family, we spent a good portion of it in the backyard. While my parents did some gardening, my sister and I worked on our laptops and Bianca & Sorcha roamed around looking for a shady spot. Bianca did not like it when I went up to take photos of these blossoms, her barking communicated her displeasure that she could not go up there with me. To me, these flowers look like cherry or plum blossoms, but my dad says this tree is an Asian pear tree.

Housewarming Gift

This past weekend we welcomed our first houseguest and my oldest friend, Becca (not oldest in age, just in how long we’ve known each other). Although her stay was too short (and always is), it was great catching up with her over sushi at my favorite place, Blowfish Sushi, then brunch at Slow Club on Saturday, and finally shopping in Union Square. It’s great to have friends from the 6th grade who remember what you looked like when you had braces, Coke bottle glasses, and a spiral perm (yes, all at the same time) and loved you anyway. There’s no false pretenses after that!

She surprised me with a beautiful orchids, which I will try to not kill, as a housewarming gift. It’s lovely and the first plant I’ve owned in years.

On Sunday, I took my mom to the Pacific Orchid Expo. She loves orchids and proudly displays her plants on the kitchen counter. We had a great time looking at all the exhibition orchids and were so inspired by the varieties of flowers you can’t find in the local Safeway that we bought three plants to take home. I’ll have to take some photos of my mom’s new orchids after she plants them, but for now, here are some shots from the expo.

Nicole Hill’s Photo 101 and 102 Course

Today, Nicole Hill (my photographer teacher extraordinaire) opened up registration for her March Photo 101 and 102 courses. These are her first classes of the year in San Francisco, so if you’ve been waiting since last year, better sign up quick. She sold out very quickly last year.

If you’re in a beginner or looking to take your photography to the next (manual) level, this is a great class for you. I had a blast when I took it and I only wish there was a Photo 103 course.

Happy Chinese New Year’s!

Chinese New Year’s is the most important holiday in our family and is typically celebrated on the night before with an elaborate dinner. There is usually barbecued pork, fish, chicken, a few veggie dishes, rice, soup, crab, clay pots, noodles and more. It is the fanciest meal of the year.

Relatives will stop by during the 15 days of the new year bringing candy, buns, and other food. Our Hong Kong relatives will usually call to wish us a Happy New Year. Children (defined as those not yet married) usually get red envelopes with money in it.

We don’t follow many of the traditions anymore, and instead have made up some of our own, like playing mahjong until the wee hours of the night. And unfortunately, the “children” don’t get red envelopes either, since being in our thirties and still single isn’t something that our parents think should be rewarded.

Based on the minute of my birth, my lucky element is Wood so the Year of the Tiger is supposed to be a very good year for me. I’m looking forward to it. Hope everyone has a fantastic Year of the Tiger.

Bali Orchid Garden

Left Andrew by himself at the hotel and headed out to the Bali Orchid Garden in Sanur to take some photos. I was on a quest to get butterflies and dragonflies but it proved much harder than I thought.
