My little sister, Teresa, and her boyfriend of six years, Doug, got engaged yesterday. Doug re-created their first hiking experience in Tahoe (except with snow this time), complete with the Fluffy Puppies, and proposed with this beautiful sapphire ring. He even remembered her distaste for blood diamonds and got her a socially-conscious ring from Brilliant Earth in Union Square.

To celebrate, we gathered at my parents’ house and toasted the good news with a bottle of champagne.

We are all so excited for them, and Doug’s sister and I are already plotting to take over their wedding planning and book an Italian villa or a French chateau for the big day. We’ll let them know where to show up. I’ve already insisted on a fabulous wedding photographer and I’m hoping for Sarah Yates or Jose Villa. Expect many more wedding-related posts in the future…

Happy Birthday, Andrew!

Yesterday was Andrew’s birthday and despite work obligations and a massive headache, we did find time to go to Chez Maman for our favorite burgers and eat some strawberry shortcake at home.

I would show you pictures of what I got Andrew as his birthday gift, but they’re all being returned. Instead, I’ll share one of my all-time favorite photos, taken on the night that Andrew first sang to me. For his birthday two years ago, I gave him a framed print of this photo and I wrote a line from one of the songs he sang below it, “Have mercy on the man who sings to be adored.” It’s still hanging up in the living room.

Nicole Hill’s Photo 101 and 102 Course

Today, Nicole Hill (my photographer teacher extraordinaire) opened up registration for her March Photo 101 and 102 courses. These are her first classes of the year in San Francisco, so if you’ve been waiting since last year, better sign up quick. She sold out very quickly last year.

If you’re in a beginner or looking to take your photography to the next (manual) level, this is a great class for you. I had a blast when I took it and I only wish there was a Photo 103 course.

Chinese New Year’s Dinner

My family loves a good excuse to get together and eat and Chinese New Year’s is no exception.

For dessert, we departed from the traditional Chinese dessert and opted for a Coconut Cream Pie from Tartine Bakery in San Francisco. I think my mom “forgot” to make dessert just so I’d bring something super sweet from Tartine.

A couple months ago, we went on a nice long ride through Yountville. It’s my favorite place in the wine country. A 30 mile ride through the wineries of Silverado, Stag’s Leap, and Domain Chandon will get your appetite going. Too bad we didn’t have reservations at French Laundry. Instead, we grabbed some hot tea and pastries from Bouchon Bakery and made our way back to San Francisco.

Merry Christmas! It’s been a quiet day for the Ko family. Dad took off to go to Hong Kong for my cousin’s wedding this morning, so we opened presents last night. I slept most of the day after taking Benadryl (that stuff knocks me out), ate leftover prime rib for dinner, and watched Julie & Julia with my sister and our good family friend H. It’s a really cute movie…I highly recommend it.

Thanksgiving

Hope everyone had a happy Thanksgiving. We cooked our first Thankgsiving at the Ko household the weekend before so that Teresa and I could be with our boyfriends’ families this year. The cooking started 3 days before and I was so sick and tired of what I cooked – the turkey and gravy, cornbread and sausage stuffing, the green bean casserole, and mashed potatoes – that I didn’t take any pictures. Instead, I opted to take pictures of the dessert (courteous of Teresa), and the wine from Stag’s Leap…an excellent wine if you’re looking for one.
